Official Opening and World Metrology Day 2021

 

Officially opening the new Building

On Thursday 20 May 2021 the Measurement Standards Laboratory officially opened their new laboratories at the Gracefield Innovation Quarter in Lower Hutt.  The building is the new home for MSL's Temperature and Electrical Standards laboratories and completed the first stage of a site wide redevelopment of the Gracefield campus.

The new MSL Temperature and Electrical laboratories will now enjoy state of the art lab spaces critical to the precision research and standards maintenance work as expected from New Zealand's national measurement institute.

The day commenced with a dawn blessing of the new building acknowledging MSL's cultural links to local iwi Te Āti Awa, followed by an official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony that included a number of guest speakers. Guests where then invited into the new building to explore the spaces and finally understand what MSL has been so excited about over the past two years of its development. The programme of speakers that followed was well received, topical and relevant so guests left with a greater understanding of the work being done to support the maintenance of measurement standards.

World Metrology Day 2021

World Metrology Day is an annual celebration to mark the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, which set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement.  Metrology plays a central role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, improving the quality of life and protecting the global environment.

Following the official opening, MSL delivered a full programme of talks, workshops, lab tours and the chance to network to over 70 stakeholders who attended the full day. 

This annual celebration acknowledges the global measurement infrastructure that exists today, 126 years on from the first countries signing the Metre Convention.  It was also a chance to stay up to date with current measurement related research and developments, hear about global trends and MSL initiatives and talk to MSL scientists and customers about topical issues.
