World Metrology Day 2018 New Zealand
An open invitation is out for testing labs, government agencies, key stakeholders, industry partners and the public to attend to hear and learn about what is in store with the new ISO17025, the SI redefinition, the validation of new tests and more.
Anyone who has been to one of these events will know this is the foremost metrology learning and networking event of the year. Read more on the MSL website and download the full programme. Places are limited so please secure your seat now and register online. https://world-metrology-day-2018.lilregie.com/step1

Revision of the SI in 2019
There will still be the same seven base units (second, metre, kilogram, ampere, kelvin, mole, and candela). Of these, the kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole will be redefined by choosing exact numerical values for the Planck constant, the elementary electric charge, the Boltzman constant, and the Avogadro constant, respectively. The second, metre and candela are already defined by physical constants and it is only necessary to edit their present definitions. The revised SI will be launched on World Metrology Day in 2019 (20th May) so keep watching as our partner organisations plan some exciting events to promote and raise awareness.
Education Update
The education committee met by teleconference last month and reported in on their findings from the last 90 days.
Research done by the team indicates that there is an opportunity for MSA to join forces with existing programmes in Australia and New Zealand to improve the awareness of measurement in our communities.
The Education committee are currently developing a brochure to use when engaging with education providers. The brochure will be available in digital format for all MSA members to use.
MSA Memberships
Did you realise there are different types of membership with MSA?
Student Members are full time students under the age of 25 that have an interest in metrology but do not currently satisfy the requirements for a higher grade of membership. Membership is free. You will need an institutional email address as confirmation of your student status.
Associate Members have an interest and involvement in metrology but do not currently satisfy the requirements for a higher grade of membership. Annual subscription is $45.
Members must satisfy requirements regarding appropriate experience in metrology and formal educational qualifications. Extensive practical experience may be deemed as equivalent to formal qualifications. Annual subscription is $45.
Fellows have either held a position of considerable responsibility for metrology activities or made a significant contribution to metrology. Annual subscription is $45.
Honorary Fellows are elected by the membership in recognition of their conspicuous service to metrology or the Metrology Society of Australasia.
If you would like to advance your membership contact Cynthia on secretary@metrology.asn.au. Now would also be a really good time to log in to the MSA website, check out the latest discussion or start something new and check your contact details are up-to-date.
MSA Linked in Profile
We now have a Linked in profile that will be another way of keeping up to date with MSA activities. Please visit the MSA Linked in page and follow us. Please also invite other Metrologists to do the same so that we can grow our online presence.
Training Opportunities
Did you know both NMI in Australia and MSL in NZ run regular training courses? Support your lab’s accreditation and staff development. All sorts of fields are covered at multiple venues. You can check out the 2018 schedules here:

MSA Out and About
We'd love to hear about what events and conferences our members are attending and the value these offer. Neil Sturrock was recently invited to deliver a metrology awareness presentation at the Australian Oil & Gas (AOG) 2018 Expo in Perth on March 15th. His presentation called “Understanding the impact of precision, accuracy and long-term drift in measurement transducers.” which was an ideal way to promote Metrology to the Oil and Gas sector.
Calling for Volunteers - MSA 2020
The next MSA conference will be in Melbourne, Australia in the first quarter of 2020. Committee member Tony Bergen is heading the early investigations for venues and dates, but we'd love to build a small organising team to help Tony. If you would like to be part of the fantastic conference committee and help organise this awesome event, please email Cynthia on secretary@metrology.asn.au.

Pressure controllers are electronic controllers which quickly and automatically provide a pressure based on a supply pressure. Due to their high accuracy and control stability, pressure controllers are especially suitable as references for production lines and laboratories. Controllers carry out automatic testing and/or calibration of all types of instruments. The reduction in time taken to test and calibrate equates to impressive cost savings.
There are a number of well-known pneumatic models on the market such as the fast Mensor CPC4000 industrial controller and the high end CPC8000 Mensor that provides an impressive ± 0.004 % FS accuracy. Using a pressure controller for instruments that require a liquid medium is now also possible with the Mensor CPC8000-H. Automated control for pressures up to 160 MPa (1600 bar) is carried out using either hydraulic oil or water.
The CPC8000-H provides fast and automatic testing and calibration of many types of high pressure measuring instruments. The hard work of handling weights and generating pressures by manually turning a capstan are eliminated and the 0.01 % FS accuracy is impressive. The CPC8000-H is also useful for cyclic pressure-load tests due to its robustness and reliability.
The Wika team in both NZ and Australia will assist you in choosing the best controller for your application.
